Changes are coming

Well, it saddens me to say,"winter is over". Don't get me wrong. I like the spring, but I love winter. Even though I got up to the mountains for 10 days of skiing, I wanted more. The last day, my son and I skied, (beginning of March) he asked, "Can we ski everyday next season?" I wish we could, but that would mean we'd have to move. That's not going to happen.

So, out with one season and in with another. For my wife that means allergy season. For me, it's trail running and mountain biking. In fact, last week's great weather got us out on the trails a few times. This weather has really given me the spark I needed, to take off those extra pounds that have crept up over the last year or so. I've been running pretty regularly, even though my weekly mileage is low. Since my last post, I've taken about 8-10 lbs off. Two weeks ago, I ran "The Snowball 5 Miler" with one of my buddies. I was pleasantly surprised with my time.

The changing of the season has gotten me thinking of the beach. We got our surf tag, so we will soon be surf fishing down at Cape Henlopen State Park. It's always a blast even if we don't catch anything.

Ok, enough with all the blah, blah, blah.

THE START or should I say "RESTART"

Disclaimer: I'm not a writer and won't pretend to be one.
These are just my random thoughts on my training

and the outdoor lifestyle that I love.

These blogs won't be just about running. I enjoy many other outdoor activities. Mountain biking and downhill skiing are two other sports that keep me heading out into the woods. I also enjoy camping with my family, though not in the last year.

So, future writings will be random in nature and meant only to convey my progress and enjoyment that I get out of being outdoors.

Back last summer ('09), I wanted to set some goals for 2010. I needed something to motivate me. I've always wanted to get into Triathlons, so figured I train for a Half Ironman. Things started off well. However, in late July, on an easy/not to technical downhill, I crashed my mountain bike and broke my left clavicle. That, along with a bunch of other distractions, threw my training off. As the fall season waned and winter nights zapped the light from the sky, my training declined down to pretty much nothing. Needless to say, 2010 won't include a half ironman. Now I know my weight had climbed over the months, but I wouldn't get on a scale to see the damage. At least not until an upcoming doctor's visit.

Well, January 15th was that date with the Doc. So, I braced myself as I stepped on the scale. It revealed that I weighed 238 lbs. Wow, right back to where I started from three years ago! I felt very embarrassed and mad, that I let myself fall so far off the wagon. Things have to change and change they will. But, this time I'm going to document it, through writings and video. You see, over the years I've been inspired by those who wrote about their own successes. I know there has to be a lot of outdoor enthusiasts, who have fallen into the same lifestyle that I have. They want to get out there and enjoy the outdoors, but don't know where to start. I'm hoping this blog will keep me focused and inspire others to get "RESTARTED." Since that doctor's visit one week ago, I've gotten outside and ran/walked four times. It wasn't easy and my knees hurt the first couple of times, but already it's feeling better.

So, over the next several months, I'll be posting written blogs and video clips. I invite you to join in with your stories. Let's make this a fun interactive blog.
